About Us
Welcome to Dakshina School of Dance, where magic of dance comes to life.
Founded by Deepika Velayudhan Nair in 2023, a dedicated dancer with an unwavering love for Indian dance, Dakshina School of Dance is the culmination of a lifelong dream. Our school's journey began with a deep-rooted passion for dance and a strong desire to inspire the next generation of dancers. What started as a humble initiative, with our founder teaching dance to kids of friends and enthusiastically volunteering for community events, has blossomed into a thriving dance institution dedicated to nurturing talent, building character, and fostering a love for the art of movement.
Our founder's years of experience teaching children and volunteering in the community have laid the foundation for our teaching philosophy. At Dakshina, we combine expert dance knowledge with a personalized approach, ensuring that every student feels seen, valued, and supported on their dance journey. We understand that dance is not just a series of steps; it's about building confidence, cultivating creativity, and nurturing a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
Dakshina School of Dance is a member of UNESCO’s International Dance Council (CID), the official umbrella organization for all forms of dance worldwide. Through this affiliation, we uphold international standards in dance education and provide our students with opportunities to earn UNESCO-recognized certifications based on their performance and progress within our structured syllabus.
About the founder
Deepika embarked on her dance journey at a very early age and, under the tutelage of Smt.Kalamandalam Premalatha, achieved her Arangetram in India's classical dance forms such as Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, and Kuchipudi by the age of 10, showcasing her talent at the Guruvayoor Melpathur Auditorium. In addition to her classical training, she also delved into the world of folk dances under the guidance of Smt. Nandini and Smt. Kumari. Her artistic journey also encompassed a diverse range of Indian folk dance forms, such as Thiruvathira, Oppana, Karakattam, Dandiya, Garbha, and more, reflecting her profound passion for the rich cultural tapestry of India.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Do we provide certification options?
Yes, we provide certification options. Our school follows a structured syllabus with clearly defined eligibility policies for students. We conduct grade examinations in-house to evaluate each student’s progress. Based on their performance in these grade-level exams, students become eligible to receive UNESCO-recognized certifications.
-
Is it possible for a child to participate in
semi-classical dance classes?
We firmly believe that establishing a solid base in any classical dance style can boost a child's confidence in performance. Our recommendation is to enroll the child in the Bharatanatyam class, where the instructor will also introduce them to various other dance forms.
-
How much time will it take for my child to be
ready for a Bharatanatyam stage performance?
It may require 1-2 years for a child to master the fundamental adavus and establish a solid foundation. During this time, the child will also be introduced to shorter dances that incorporate the adavus they have learned.
-
If my child learns quickly, will he/she be
transferred to a different group?
Every child learns at their own unique pace, and they will be assigned to suitable groups accordingly.
